0 / THE NAME
A jobber was a market maker on the London Stock Exchange floor. Not a broker — a broker acted for a client, a jobber acted for himself. He quoted both sides of a price to anyone who asked, took the other side of every trade, and lived off the spread between the two.
The profession was abolished on 27 October 1986, the day the exchange deregulated and screens replaced the floor. The word has belonged to nobody since.
Terminology used throughout, all of it real:
| TERM | MEANING |
|---|---|
| Jobber | LSE market maker, pre-1986. Quoted both sides, took the spread. |
| Badge | The physical pass that granted floor access. Three letters and a number. |
| The floor | The trading hall. You were on it or you were not. |
| Signatory | One of the 24 brokers who signed the Buttonwood Agreement, 17 May 1792. |
| Turn | The jobber's profit on a round trip. |
| Big Bang | 27 October 1986. The day the floor died. |
